The meaning of ulidia

The Red Hand of Ulster symbol comes from the story about two kings in ships racing to the shores of Ulster.

The first to touch the shore would be the winner and claim Ulster. When one king saw he was going to lose the race he cut off his own hand and threw it ashore so that he would be first to touch the shore and win.

The name Ulidia, coming from the Uliad tribe, was the ancient early history title of Ulster before the Gaelic name Uladh then the Viking name Ulster.

At different periods of our early history the kings had in their service bodies of militia, who underwent a yearly course of training, and who were at call like a standing army whenever the monarch required them. The most celebrated of these were the "Red Branch Knights" of Ulster.

Every year, during the summer months, various companies of the Knights came to Emain near Armagh under their several commanders, to be drilled and trained in military science and feats of arms.

The greatest Red Branch commander was Cú Chulainn, a demigod, the mightiest of the heroes.

So Ulidia Taekwondo looks back in time to call upon the fighting spirit of the Red Branch Knights to be employed in this equally ancient Korean martial art and the elite Korean forces known as the Hwarang.

A person dressed as an ancient warrior in armor and traditional clothing, holding a sword, with a bow and quiver on their back.
A muscular male warrior, shirtless with tattoos, holding a shield in one hand and a spear in the other, standing on rocky terrain during a sunset with pink and orange clouds, wearing armor on one leg, a tattered cape, and a loincloth, with mountains in the background.
